Korado Korlević

Astronom i osnivač / Astronomer and founder - Zvjezdarnica Višnjan

// Korado Korlević is one of Croatia’s leading astronomers and the founder of the Višnjan Observatory, as well as numerous educational projects in the country in this field. He was born in Poreč in 1958. He completed high school in Pula and graduated from the Faculty of Education at the University of Rijeka. In 1990, he was one of the leaders of the First International Expedition to the site of the Tunguska explosion in Siberia. Motivated by the issue of Earth’s collisions with asteroids and comets, he has promoted research into small bodies of the Solar System, which led to the first discoveries of asteroids and comets from the Republic of Croatia. He has discovered more than 1,400 minor planets (asteroids) and participated in the discovery of two comets. Since 1993, he has worked as the head of educational and scientific activities at the Višnjan Observatory. In addition to his teaching, he has published numerous scientific and popular-scientific papers both in Croatia and abroad. He is currently engaged in astronomy education, promoting astronomy and science through popular lectures and media appearances, building astronomical instruments, research on meteors and meteorites, developing methods of creative thinking and applying them in education, as well as projects for the protection of nature and heritage. He is the recipient of several awards and recognitions, a member of many international professional organizations, an honorary member of four associations, and in recognition of his contributions to astronomy and education, the International Astronomical Union’s Naming Commission named a celestial body between Mars and Jupiter Korado.
